Keeping warm and well during the cold weather

Here's how you can prepare for the cold weather. The advice is:

  • keep warm in winter - both inside and outdoors as it can help prevent colds, flu and more serious health problems, such as heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia and depression. Heat your home to at least 18C (65F), if you can, you might prefer your living room to be slightly warmer.
  • at the first sign of a cough or a cold, get help from your pharmacist before it gets more serious and make sure you speak to your pharmacist about medicines you should have in stock to help get you and your family through the cold weather.

Carol Trower, CEO, Local Pharmaceutical Committee said: "During winter most coughs, colds and sneezes are viral and can be dealt with by pharmacists. You don't need an appointment to see a pharmacist and most pharmacies have private consultation areas, so they are a good first port of call. Your pharmacist will say if you need further medical attention."

If your GP Practice or pharmacy is closed, call NHS 111 and speak to an adviser who will direct you to a service that is open.
