Accessible health advice, fun activities and great prizes to win, including a season ticket to Oxford United FC, are on offer on June 28 at a health event for people with a learning disability and their carers.

The free event is being organised by Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust and Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group at Unipart Conference Centre, Cowley.

Visitors are welcome to drop in any time between 10am and 4pm – no booking is needed.

All who attend will be entered into a prize draw with a chance to win a season ticket to Oxford United Football Club and one of ten cookery sessions with Oxford City Farm cookery school.

There will be talks on bowel, breast and cervical screening as well as healthy lifestyles and information stalls from NHS partners, voluntary organisations and charities. And fun is not forgotten: there’ll be a chance to take part in smoothie making, coached football sessions and other games.

Kirsten Prance, Associate Clinical Director and Acting Service Director for Learning Disabilities at Oxford Health, said:

“We are delighted to be holding our learning disability physical health event on June 28.  As we are sadly aware, there are still large health inequalities for people with a learning disability. Too many people are dying from preventable conditions or have a higher proportion of preventable illness that has a negative impact on their quality of life.

“This event will be a wonderful opportunity for people with a learning disability and their families and carers to join health professionals to share experiences and gain advice to support with better health.

It is part of our strategy for improving the lives of people living in Oxfordshire. Please come and join us to help make a difference to the lives of those we support.”

Dr David Chapman, clinical chair of Oxfordshire CCG, said:

“We are aware that people with learning disabilities have found it harder to access the appropriate health and wellbeing services - in particular, screening programmes, advice on vaccinations, healthy eating and appropriate exercise.  We hope this event will provide people with learning disabilities and those who care for them with useful and interesting information about getting the most out of their health and care services, especially around cancer screening programmes and the simpler things people can do to help prevent illness, such as such as eating well.

“Many people with learning disabilities have faced greater challenges than usual over the past two and half years of the pandemic, and it’s important we ensure their health needs are met in the future. I am delighted that this event, which has been long in the planning, has been organised by the Oxford Health Learning Disability team.”

Live longer, live better will be held from 10am to 4pm on Tuesday, June 28 at Unipart Conference Centre, Garsington Road, Oxford OX4 2PG. The programme and talks timetable as well as an event poster are available online at
