The annual fight against flu has begun and across Oxfordshire people are being invited to get their vaccination against the virus.

A flu vaccine is available for free on the NHS for the following people:

  • All children aged two to nine on 31 August 2016
  • All primary school-aged children in former primary school pilot areas
  • Those aged six months to under 65 years in clinical risk groups
  • Pregnant women
  • Those aged 65 years and over
  • Those in long-stay residential care homes
  • Carers

Dr Edward Capo-Bianco Clinical Locality Director at Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group said: “If you are in any of the ‘at-risk’ groups, my advice is to visit your GP or Practice Nurse and get the free NHS flu vaccination as soon as possible.  It is quick and easy to have and is the best form of protection for you and others.”

Edward continues:  “The flu is not the same as getting a cold.  It can seriously affect your health and the risks of developing complications are greater for people within the ‘at-risk’ groups.”

Flu can be serious for young children, help protect them from flu with one simple nasal spray.  It is free, fast and painless.

Children eligible for the flu vaccine:

  • Children aged two and three on August 31 2017 – that is, children born between September 1 2013 and August 31 2015.
  • Children in reception class, years 1 - 4 in primary school will be offered the vaccination in school as part of a school based programme during the 2017 autumn school term.
