The NHS in Oxfordshire has launched Phase 1 of the 'Big Health and Care Consultation' to ask patients and the public what they think about possible changes to some healthcare services in the county.

Since summer 2016, the Oxfordshire Transformation Programme has been listening and talking to a wide range of people across the country about how best to develop and improve health services.

The 'big health and care conservation' was an opportunity for doctors, nurses and other NHS leaders to discuss with the public, volunteers, charities and patient representatives how to improve health care and tackle the challenges the NHS is facing as demand grows and budgets are limited.

The feedback from all the groups has been considered and the proposals for change have been developed using this feedback together with the opinions and expertise of clinicians and senior NHS leaders.

David Smith, chief executive of Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group, said: "We are now launching a public consultation for three months and would like to share your views on these proposed changes.

We want to hear from people who use the services in Oxfordshire - patients, carers, residents young and old and people who work in our health services."

The consultation, which runs from Monday 16 January 2017 until 9 April 2017, will cover acute hospital services (acute hospitals provide a wide range of specialist care and treatment including surgery, medical care, emergency care and tests), specifically:

  • changing the way we use our hospital beds and increasing care closer to home in Oxfordshire
  • planned care at the Horton General in Banbury (planned care includes tests and treatment planned in advance and not urgent or emergency care)
  • acute stroke services in Oxfordshire
  • critical care at the Horton General (critical care helps people with life threatening or very serious injuries and illnesses)
  • maternity services including obstetrics, Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU), and emergency gynaecology surgery in North Oxfordshire

The full details of our proposals are in the consultation document available on the Transformation website where you can find. The website also has further details and documents.

This is consultation for phase one. There will be a further consultation for phase two later this year. We will be engaging with the public, patients and clinicians in preparation for phase two about other service areas, including community and primary care services.

The work is also part of an over-arching five year plan (called a Sustainability and Transformation Plan or STP) across Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire West, (referred to as the BOB STP) which sets out how the NHS plans to bring about the changes we all need to make.
