Palliative Care

Palliative care is an essential part of end of life care addressing symptoms. It is crucial that patients are treated as comfortably as possible by controlling pain and relevant symptoms to enable a co-ordinated service.

Palliative care looks at every aspect of patients care to enable a smooth service to be delivered. This type of care:

  • Uses a team approach to address the needs of patients and their families, including bereavement counselling, if indicated;
  • Will enhance quality of life for the time remaining
  • Is applicable early in the course of illness, in conjunction with other therapies that are intended to prolong life, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy, and includes those investigations needed to better understand and manage distressing clinical complications.
